I hope everyone had a safe and dry weekend!   

Important dates:

Early Release will be on October 5^th and 6^th.

No school will be on October 7th and October 14^th. 

Parent Conferences will be held on October 6^th and 7^th.

October 26^th- Picture Day

Vocabulary Words:

naturalist- a person who studies plants or animals

glaciers- great masses of ice moving very slowly down a mountain, a long a valet, or over a land area

preserve- to keep from harm or change

botany- the science of plants; the study of plants and plant life

species- a set of related living things that all have certain characteristics

conservation- protection of natural resources

Grammar Focus: Clauses and Complex Sentences

Dependent clause- begins with a word such as because or when. It cannot stand alone as a sentence. Ex) When we arrived at the campground, the rain had stopped.

Independent clause- can stand alone ex) After we ate our supper, we went for a hike.
Complex sentence- a sentence made up of a dependent clause and an independent clause. Ex) When we first saw Yosemite, it was a beautiful fall day.
